Unlocking Potentials Within Shea Communities

Welcome to Fair Shea

Since 2021, Fair Shea has been working in rural communities, with women and youth by empowering them to become drivers of their communities’ development. We do this by providing diverse skills to women farmers, shea nut pickers and shea butter producers as well as youth with interest in agriculture to turn their businesses and farms into fair, profitable and sustainable enterprises.

Who we are

Fair Shea is a Non-Governmental empowerment and development organization of choice that is working and collaborating with women shea nut pickers, shea butter producers and youth in rural communities in Northern Ghana to bridge the wide gender inequality gaps and accelerate development.

We focus our interventions on three main project areas: Empowerment, Evironment and Climate Change, and Sustainable Community Development.

The Problem

In Ghana, gender-based disparities, especially in the Northern part of the country is alarming. Deeply embedded socio-cultural patriarchal norms have females treated as second-class citizens. Females in Northern Ghana are underprivileged in various arenas of life. The average “working poor” poverty rate for all employed women in Ghana is at an estimated 67.1 percent.

Under the Constitution of Ghana, women are given equal rights yet disparities in education, employment, and health for women remain prevalent. Additionally, women have much less access to resources.

According to a study by the Friedrich-Ebert Foundation, in the area of Agriculture, Ghanaian women contribute substantially to the economic development of the country. They form an estimated 52% of the agricultural labour force and produce 70% of food crops. Women also constitute 90% of the labour force in the marketing of farm produce.

How we are solving this?

We organize women within the shea value chain, women and youth with interest in agriculture to receive training and access support to increase production, raise their incomes, become independent and operate sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural enterprises.
